Either the franchises already have a presence in Connecticut, have excellent sales from limited locations and want to expand; or the franchises exist in far off places and are lured by the promise of higher incomes and positioning between Boston and New York.

Max Muscle Sports Nutrition was recently featured in the Sacramento Business Journal for its plans to add five more stores to the Sacramento, Calif., area in the next year. With six locations in the four-county area, the addition of five more will nearly double the national sports nutrition retailer’s presence. The article also highlighted that the sports nutrition industry as a whole is on the upswing, growing 9 percent in 2010 and generating $22.7 billion in sales. Van Heusen said he felt comfortable going into a sports nutrition business because living a healthy lifestyle is something that he is committed to each day. Austin Browne spent 10 years as a sheet metal mechanic in the aerospace industry and another 10 as a maintenance mechanic, but what he really loved was nutrition and fitness.

Eight years ago he turned his personal passion into a business, opening a Max Muscle Sports Nutrition franchise in a 1,200-square-foot space on Trautwein Road in Riverside. He was on the verge of leasing a second site in Moreno Valley for another franchise a couple of years ago, but the economy's abrupt and alarming turn caused him to step back and re-examine.

Nutrition franchise muscling way into Pickerington

The annual Arnold Fitness Expo may have come and gone again, but a new local store hopes to cultivate that health-and-fitness mindset year-round.

Seth Protus plans to open his Max Muscle Sports Nutrition franchise in Pickerington, 201 Clint Drive, March 14. It will be the only store for the Orange, Calif.-based sports nutrition retailer in Central Ohio.

County’s 2nd Max Muscle store opens in Bountiful

Folks in south Davis County who want to start working out, already are in an exercise regimen or are athletes wanting to build muscle without steroids now can go to a new Max Muscle Sports Nutrition store in Bountiful, one of the latest in a national chain of 152 franchisee-owned outlets.

On March 1, James Gustason opened his store at 416 W. 500 South, the county’s second. Along with a store owned by another franchisee in Layton that opened in 2008, the two are the only Max Muscle outlets in Utah.

Tualatin fitness store run with dedication

The Max Muscle Sports Nutrition store at 7684 S.W. Nyberg St. is just one of several fitness-oriented businesses to open in Tualatin in the past year. As other stores have closed in the difficult economic times, businesses aimed at helping people get healthy have blossomed.

“People are focused on health,” said Reginald Lee, who owns the Max Muscle Sports Nutrition franchise in Tualatin. Lee opened the franchise in October after hearing a radio ad for the company looking to open a new store. He said that his customers are looking to improve their health. With the obesity problem in America and rocky political times in the health care industry, people want to do what they can to take care of their bodies, Lee said.
